SOLABIO

LogoWithin our project SOLABIO, we aim to develop new agri-environmental measures which tackle the issue of biodiversity decline in farmland areas: We work together with pioneer farmers who test new measures in their fields.

We organise demo sessions for the general public, farmers and policy makers in order to dissiminate our results and experiences. We collaborate with scientific institutes and volunteers to monitor the effects of the measures we adopt in the field. We work around different themes: natural pest control through the development and monitoring of flower field strips, beetle banks, winter food crops for farmland birds, natural forest edges for butterflies and nesting strips for meadow bird chicks.

The aims of VLM & SOLABIO are:

  • Evaluation of existing agro-environmental measures through monitoring
  • Developing new agro-environmental measures that fit into farmers management and deliver profit for nature and farming
  • Informing farmers about existing and new agro-environmental measures during excursions and info sessions
  • Formulating improvements of the current agro environmental policy.

We work together with different farmers and test new agri environmetal measures on their fields. Experts monitor the fields to test the effectiveness of the measures. We inform other farmers, public and policy makers through info sessions and workshops.

Although the project is not finished yet, we have already obtained some success stories: Flower strips have eliminated the need to spray, there are now field strips containing over 50species of ground beetles and living forest edges are attracting butterflies.
